Writing a Remote Job Description That Attracts Good People

2 min read · Updated 13 September 2026

Short answer

State the salary range, the required timezone overlap, and the countries you can hire in. Those three lines cut unsuitable applications more than any screening question, and their absence is the most common reason good candidates skip a listing.

The three lines that matter

Salary range, timezone overlap requirement, and eligible countries. Listings without them attract volume and waste everyone's time, including yours.

Cut the boilerplate

Rockstar, ninja, fast-paced, wear many hats. These filter out experienced candidates rather than attracting them. Describe the actual work instead.

Describe the first ninety days

What will this person have done by month three? It is the single most useful paragraph for a candidate deciding whether to apply, and it forces you to be clear about the role.

Common questions

Should I publish a salary range?

Yes. It improves application quality substantially and is legally required in a growing number of places.

How long should a job description be?

Under 600 words. Requirements as a short list, not fifteen bullets.
