Resigning From a Remote Job Properly

2 min read · Updated 13 September 2026

Short answer

Give notice in writing, state your last working day, and offer a handover plan in the same message. Remote handovers depend on documentation, so start writing things down before you resign, not after.

How you leave determines your reference, and in small industries that matters for years.

The resignation message

Three sentences: you are resigning, your last working day based on the contractual notice, and an offer to hand over. No reasons required, and giving them rarely helps.

The handover is the reputation

Remotely, nobody can tap your shoulder after you go. Write down: what you own, where it lives, what is half-finished, who to ask. A good handover document is remembered long after the exit.

Do not go quiet in the last two weeks

It is the most visible fortnight of your tenure. Coasting is noticed and remembered more than anything you did in month eight.

Common questions

Do I have to say why I am leaving?

No. A brief, neutral reason is fine if asked, but you are not obliged to explain.

Can I leave before my notice period ends?

Only by agreement. Leaving early without it can breach the contract and damage the reference.
