Cover letters are read quickly or not at all. Write for the reader who gives you fifteen seconds.
The four-paragraph structure
1. One sentence on why this company specifically, referencing something real
2. The closest work you have done to this role, with a result attached
3. One piece of evidence you operate well without supervision
4. Your timezone, availability and notice period
Cut these
"I am writing to apply for the position of..." โ they know. Any sentence describing your personality without evidence. A restatement of your CV. Anything over 200 words.
The paragraph that matters
Remote employers are hiring someone they cannot see. One concrete example of you owning something end to end, with nobody checking, does more than any adjective. "I ran the migration solo across three months and reported progress weekly in writing" is the whole pitch.
Tailoring cheaply
The first sentence and the second paragraph should change for every application. The rest can stay. That takes five minutes, not thirty, and it is the difference between a reply and silence.
Common questions
Do I still need a cover letter in 2026?
When the form has an optional box, use it. It is one of the few places to make a case a CV cannot.
How long should a cover letter be?
Under 200 words. Four short paragraphs.
