What gets you shortlisted
A public repository with real commit history beats a list of technologies. Reviewers look for readable commits, tests, and a readme that explains a decision rather than listing setup steps.
The process to expect
Screening call, take-home or live exercise, a deeper technical conversation about a system you built, then team fit. Four rounds is normal and not a bad sign.
Where the roles concentrate
Backend and infrastructure roles are the most reliably remote. Frontend is close behind. Roles touching regulated data or on-premise hardware are the least likely to be fully remote.
Common questions
Do I need a computer science degree?
No, in most of the market. A demonstrable body of code carries more weight than the qualification.
Are remote developer jobs competitive?
Yes at the junior end, less so at senior level where specific experience is scarce.
