Proximity bias is real. The counter is documentation and visibility, not more hours.
Give your manager ammunition
They are advocating for you in a meeting you will never see. A one-page summary of what you owned and what it produced is what they take into that room.
Be visible outside your team
Write the summary others read. Present at the company-wide session. Answer questions in public channels. Remotely, this is the substitute for being known.
Ask the direct question
"What specifically would I need to be doing for the next level?" Then get the answer in writing and revisit it quarterly. Vague answers are themselves information about whether promotion is realistic there.
Common questions
Are remote workers promoted less often?
Some studies suggest proximity bias exists. Deliberate visibility and written records substantially offset it.
How do I get noticed remotely?
Produce visible artefacts — summaries, documents, presentations — that people outside your immediate team read.
